The 2022 Mid Atlantic Classic was held from June 29th-July 3rd at various venues throughout the Annapolis, Baltimore, and DC areas. Some of the best talent in the US Mid Atlantic region was showcased. Similar to the the Black Bear Top 5, this blog will recognize the best uncommitted pitchers and position players I watched while scouting this past week.
Here is my "Top 5" from the 2022 Mid Atlantic Classic:
Uncommitted Pitchers:
1. ('23,MD) RHP Leo Simpson of Mid Atlantic Red Sox
Showcased some electric stuff coming out of the pen on Friday. His fastball, although not going to it a bunch, lived 87-89, and topped at 91. CB really stood out; served as set up pitch, K pitch, and everything in between. CB was 74-75 w/devastating vertical depth working with spin that got up to ~3000 RPMs. Moved well and quick down the slope while using his size very well. Didn’t run into any trouble in his innings of work.
2. ('23,VA) RHP/OF Jack Holland of Nova Premier
Big time development here in the long 6'3" 185lb frame. The long time position player is keying in on pitching more lately. He posted two stellar showings at back-to-back tournaments in both the Black Bear Classic and the Mid Atlantic Classic. At Black Bear he was lights out and got up to 91. This week, in Annapolis, he was sitting in the upper 8s and flirting with the low 9s again. Command was there too; shoved a CG win while he was at it.
3. ('25,MD) RHP Nathan Wines of API Cavs 16U
The first player on the summer circuit to make my Top 5 twice. Wines started to turn more heads at Black Bear Select and the Black Bear Classic. Now, after another quality outing at the Mid Atlantic Classic–6 shut out IP, 2 hits, and 10 Ks–he has cemented himself as one of the best 2025 follow arms in the Mid Atlantic region. Projectable 6'4" 180lb frame from a H3/4 slot. FB was living in the mid 8s and topped out at 86. The BB stands out at 69-72; good CH mixed in at 76. Strikeout pitching; missed a ton of bats, changed eye level, and disrupted timing.
4. ('23,CT) RHP Aidan Dowd of Clubhouse 2023
Dowd came out in the first game of pool play on a mission. Quality start with 5 shut-out IP. The FB was 85-87 throughout; topping 88. Highlighted a true power circle CH at 80. Mixed in a BB at 73-75. Controlled the game against a top tier lineup w/college bats. Has been up to 89 before. Good command, velo, and ability to spot a CH from Dowd will surely make a college skipper happy. Stands at a respectable 6’ 190lbs.
5. ('23,MD) RHP Cooper Sidell of Mid Atlantic Dirtbags 2023
6'2" 190lbs. The best collective pitching performance from this past week. Showed off the mix on Thursday with the FB getting up to 87 and sitting mid 8s. Went to CB a lot which was 67-69; CH was spotted at 73. Then, on championship Sunday he closed out the semifinal game and proceeded to toss a 4-hit CG win in the championship the same day. Command was there all week. Gave a BB glove signal in his setup before every pitch that messes with hitters. Uber confident mound presence and ultra competitor.
Uncommitted Position Players:
1. ('23,MD) 3B/OF Ryan Bouma of Mid Atlantic Red Sox
Gap to gap guy with some juice. Swing has all the right pieces; uphill, good bat speed, good posture, and adjustability. He hit an XBH in all three games I watched. Gets the job done defensively. Good follow bat the rest of the year. 6.7 runner. Great student.
2. ('23,CT) MIF/OF Garrett Larsen of Baseball U CT Black
Came out swinging with a leadoff triple in the first 10:30am slot of the week. Hit the ball well all week and consistently found barrels. Baseball U CT Black had the cleanest left side of the infield at the Mid Atlantic Class between Larsen at short and Cordona at 3rd. Larsen moved extremely well with 6.6 speed that translated to live actions. Excellent student with 1330 SAT and 4.3 GPA.
3. ('23,CT) INF Maico Cordona of Baseball U CT Black
6'2" 200lb uber agile 3B with SS hands and tendencies; really smooth at third base this week. Made a couple big and long putouts. Really clean upper body connection and bat path offensively.
4. ('23,DE) 3B/RHP Jaryn Sample of East Coast Titans
6'3" 225lbs. Agile corner INF for his size. He made some long 5-3 put-outs from deep 3rd. Also made the intermediate and slow roller play as well. Has some pop in the bat with a good early connection and flat path that induced some hard low LDs. Held his own on the mound and tossed 3 scoreless to close out championship play; lived low 8s.
5. ('23,PA) 3B/RHP Drew Delcollo of Mid Atlantic Red Sox
Strong 6'1" 200lb frame. Closed set up, toe tap load, and stays through it well. Takes some big hacks and has a bit of power potential. Good approach at the plate with visible intent to damage on takes and swings. Seemed to be a good chance Delcollo could leave the yard at any time when he's in the box. Clean defensively. Good student.
Uncommitted Honorable Mention:
('24,MD) C/UTIL Dan Leikus of Mid Atlantic Red Sox
(‘23,MD) INF Trent Waire of Team XP
('23,MD) MIF Zane Gross of Mid Atlantic Red Sox
('23,MD) LHP Wyatt Mummert of Stinger United
('23,MD) MIF Josh Erd of Mid Atlantic Red Sox
('23,MD) OF Adam Hicks of Mid Atlantic Dirtbags 2023
('23,MD) MIF John Blanco of Stinger United
('23,PA) LHP Derek Volz of PA Rebels
('23,DC) RHP Elliott Eaton of Mid Atlantic Red Sox
